Purpose: To provide graduate study and research opportunities in fields related to the management of spent nuclear fuel and high level radioactive wastes.
Eligibility: This program is open to graduate students who are working on a master's or doctoral degree in earth sciences, engineering, materials sciences, or radiation sciences at participating schools (for a list of these schools, write to the address above). Application should be made before or during the first year of graduate school. All programs operated by the Science/Engineering Education Division (SEED) of Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) seek to broaden the participation of minorities, women, and persons with disabilities in science and engineering careers.
Financial data: Participants receive an annual stipend of $14,400, plus an additional $300 per month during their practicum. Participants are also paid for some of their travel and tuition and fees up to $8,000 per year.
Duration: 1 year; may be renewed for up to 4 additional years.
Special features: Participants intern at various U.S. Department
of Energy (DOE) research facilities. This program is funded by the DOE's
Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management and administered by ORISE/SEED.
